Making a Music Video...Happy Halloween!

So I decided I needed a goal for the videos, a mood, a plan for the kind of feeling i wanted them to have. I wanted to start creating my own sounds for the videos, but first i wanted to use someone who did dance videos best-Michael Jackson of course! So it goes without saying i needed to create a video inspired by ThrilleR! Mood-A little creepy & slightly freaky, well it is halloween! Below is the first attempt in Studio...

Obviously I need to add the original..Voted the most influental pop video of all time! What a genius!

Working with the sculptures & shadows n Video...

So I've gotten hooked on spotlights! Loving videoing the sculptures doing their tang from behind the screen. Now you can really see the layering of the tones, more definite shadows with the stronger spotlights. Like the way people see the different things in them, sometimes you mite see figures which is cool seeing as all the shapes came from the body in movment. Still have alot to do to make the videos more decent but its all experimenting eh!

Working with changing the sculptures that are hanging, hanging one at a time videoing them and then hanging them alltoghether and seeing how they interacting, trying to go from calm movements to madness!
Taking compositions from the shadows i've tried to work some paintings, trying to get the movement going and working with colour.

Adding more colour and making more videos!

Adding more colours of the Middle east, wanted the colours to be like the piles of spices you see in the market..nomnomnom
.

Photos of sculptures as they move, changing shadows, and interacting with eachother...colour!
Still trying to keep the idea of the movement of the Arabic script without using it really obviously..

Quick painting from sketchbook, just trying to get some of the depth between the shadows and the sculpture..using colour to bring forward and push back..not quite workin yet :D

Rowan Mersh-Love this guy, he's a textile based sculptor. Slightly more sophisticated then my pieces with tights and wire but similar idea! Like the way he creates form and his use of materials. Also brings me back to what i wanted to do at the beginning, bringing the forms back onto the body. Maybe I'll experiment more with textiles and bringing the sculptures back onto the body!

Projecting Videos onto Sculptures...

After this i pinned up a white sheet instead of paper so that i was able to photograph from behind the sheet, that way you can see both the sculptures and the shadows they create..
Below is a piece by Cleary & Connolly, we saw this interactive video piece when we went to Contemporary Dublin, I Want it! Was obsessed with it when i saw it, it traces all your movements, we were running around and dancing infront of it and watching traces of us at the same time, it's genius! "They focus on audience engagement with contemporary art practice, with outreach and community involvement becoming central to their practice.  Their art takes many forms, ranging from interactive video installation to narrative documentary, but it consistently shows a real commitment to creating a bridge between art and our daily existence."

I projected videos i had done earlier in the project onto the sculptures, can see the way the shapes imitate the movement of the body....kinda! I would love to have it really interactive like the Cleary & Connolly Videos. That as people interacted with the sculptures and the screen, above a video of their movement would be projected back to them....probably be a while before i can do that!
Shadows of sculptures mixing with shapes in the video

Close up shots with Spotlight

Adding 2 more wire sculptures and seeing how they interact...

I wanted to start adding colour to the pieces. Because I LOVE Morocco and everything about the markets there, the colour and the madness, I want to bring in those rich colours that you see everwhere there.

Hanging pieces making them mobile and photographing them..

Taking over the studio! Needed to make something i could hang the pieces from and allow them to move, and also have backdrop that i could photograph the movement of the shadows.

 Hanging infront of Barrys drawing!
Trying the shadows out on Brown Paper...

And Bigger...

Making more 3D Sculptures with heavy wire, taking shapes from the movement of the Dancer I photographed and drew...
I tried a few materials and tights ended up being the best! I was able to stretch them over the wire, and they give the effect of skin as it stretches and moves with the body.

Mixing wire pieces with quick sketches..

Wire drawings in a bigger scale, with sketches behind them-trying to mix the two (2D & 3D) so that you can't distiguish between the two...if that makes since:D

Photographed a Contemporary Dancer in the Irish World Centre in UL

I did sketches of the dancer and then brought these sketches into 3D using wire

Mixing shape with Line...

I wanted to change the effect of the pieces and the shadows by adding masking tape to the wire drawings. So it moves from just line to fuller shapes. I like the effect that from some angles you just see lines and shapes but then from others you can make out shapes of the body.

Drawing with wire...

Using my gesture drawings to draw with wire

Used the wire drawings to make a mini animation, just a trial so fairly shockin quality but hey!

Shadow time!

After experimenting with the shapes, i started hanging them and photographing them as they moved.

I found the shadows more interesting so i starting focusing more i them, below is a video with just the shadows, dancing of course:)

Taking shapes from the movement of the body

I moved on from just drawing the body in movement to taking shapes from the the movements. The videos below are from using these shapes and trying to get them to interact.

Throwing fabric in the air! Dancing/flying!

Mixing photos of Darina, with flying fabric and music!
